Urban Entertainment Graphics: Theme Parks & Entertainment Environments
Published in Hardcover by Madison Square Press (June, 1998)
Author: Wayne Hunt
Average review score:

Required Reading For Any Graphic Design Professional
Urban Graphics Entertainment, by Wayne Hunt, is an excellent resource for professionals and educators in the field of graphic design and interactive signage. Filled with crisply photographed examples of the latest in interactive graphics, traffic signage, exhibition design and point of purchase visual media, Urban Graphics Entertainment builds a strong case for such works as a free-standing area of specialization for designers of all backgrounds.

As with most sample/idea books targeted towards graphic designers, UGE enthralls the reader with vivid imagery but does so without overwhelming the reader. Each example is presented with descriptive text providing insight into why and how the design came about. While it is not a thorough revelation of the design process that went into creating each example, it is enough to allow the reader to develop some understanding of the designers intent and if they were successful.

Signage and interactive kiosks related to entertainment and sports venues are the one of the fastest growing areas of interests among graphic designers - and it is easy to see why after reading this book. A must have for practicing graphic designers and students.

Value Engineering: A Plan for Invention
Published in Hardcover by Saint Lucie Press (03 December, 1998)
Author: Richard J. Park
Average review score:

This is a marvelous,well written,understandable book.
This book is just what VE has needed. It brings Value Engineering (VE)into the modern world and shows VE to be a system esential to today's business and social environment.

The book is in four sections. The first,"The World Around Us" discusses a number of management systems, cites their strengths and when they should be used in a project development cycle to get the most benefit from each system. One of the systems discussed is VE and the difference between VE and all other management systems, both old and new, is clearly indicted.

The "Economics Of Profit" discusses in detail four essential elewments, Cost, Function, Value and Quality and the need for an understanding of each and the relationship of each one to the other to achieve a successful profitable result from effort.

The third section"The Human Element", covers Communiction, Motivation, Teams and Teamwork and Creativity as essential elements for developing any project whether it is business or personal activities.

The fourth section alone is great. "The sum Of The Parts" puts all of the technical and psychological elements together in the VE system and illustrates the operation by meaans of a simple, actual example of a project from start to finish. the project is discussed in plain language that is readily understandable. In addition, there are eight varied examples of projects that show the potential scope for application of the system from products to business and government organizations to personal affairs. there is also an appendix with a myrid of useful information.

Volcanoes in America's National Parks
Published in Paperback by Odyssey Publications (01 August, 2001)
Authors: Robert Decker and Barbara Decker
Average review score:

Take An Excellent National Park Adventure With The Deckers
When it comes to volcanoes, Robert and Barbara Decker know their stuff. If someone wants one reference on volcanoes, I recommend Volcanoes by the Deckers. Volcanoes In America's National Parks is an excellent addition to the literature of volcanoes AND the literature of America's parks. The book covers all the National Parks, Monuments, and Preserves in the United States that have current, recent, or extinct volcanoes and volcanic activity. Part One of the book is a section that covers the basics of volcanoes. Then the book takes each Park, Monument, and Preserve one by one. Part Two takes on the parks with volcanoes that have current or recent volcanic activity, such as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park [Kilauea is most likely erupting as I type this review] and Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument [the memorable eruption in 1980]. Part Three covers the parks with more ancient volcanic activity, such as Yellowstone National Park [a place teetering on the edge of erupting some day and moving into Part Two] and the Mojave National Preserve [a park I fought hard to get and one of my favorite places to explore - especially the cinder cones near Cima and the eroded volcanic tuffs of Hole-In-The-Wall]. Each park gets a generous description and an excellent map. I've been to about half of the parks described and I'm familiar with many of the rest, and the Deckers do an entertaining and accurate job with those parks. Part Four covers parks with less direct connections to volcanoes, such as Yosemite National Park [ancient magma chamber] and Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument [ancient critters killed, buried, and preserved by volcanic ash]. Part Four is one of the nicer features of the book, since the parks mentioned often have too tenuous a connection to volcanoes for many authors to include them in this kind of write up. As an earth science educator, I appreciate the inclusion of Part Four, because it makes Volcanoes In America's National Parks a most complete volcanic education. The book is a 5 star plus and the only way I could see the Deckers improving it would be to bring out a second edition that gives the parks mentioned in Part Four the same one by one treatment as the other parks mentioned. I recommend this book to anybody with an interest in volcanoes and especially for folks with a desire to get out in the field and learn their volcanology first hand.

A walk in the park

A mother's view of how a book can inspire a life.
This book is wonderful for 7-11 year olds.My son was in fourth grade and interested in foreign places and people. He found this book in his school's media center. It showed all kinds of things you would see on a walk in a park, but the great thing was that it identified all the sights in four languages, English, Russian, French and Spanish (I haven't seen this book in many years, it could have been Italian). My son took that book out of the media center every week for two years. He used it to teach himself Russian. By the time he left elementary school and the book behind, he could read, write and speak Russian enough to understand articles in Russian language newspapers, ask written questions of and speak to Russian speakers. What he got from the book is an understanding that people are the same all over the world, they just use different sounds to say the same things. This book inspired a lifelong interest in the world and its diverse peoples. He self-studied Russian until he hit college, where he majored in International Studies and Russian Language. After spending a year attending a Russian university, today he is serving his country in a former Soviet republic. He is living his dream, and it all started with this book. That's why I'm trying to find a copy. I think it would make a great gift for him. I'm sorry its out of print. It seems to me this book is needed more now than ever, with the world shrinking through electronic media. This book literally opened up the world for my son and both he and I will be forever grateful. It could do the same for others if it was still around. I don't care if this is not really a review, I just wanted to tell you and the author how I felt and what this book has meant to at least one reader.

Take a walk with the man who has taken them all
Tom St Germaine has been walking the Acadia woodlands for years. My wife and I bought this book on one of our first trips to Mt Desert Island and Bar Harbor - we have used it so very frequently that his new edition published just last year was welcome.

Take the time to stop by and say hello to Tom at the Jack Russell Pub on Route 3 - after a day of gaining the benefits of his wisdom from the miles he has covered before you.

Walking California's Desert Parks: A Day Hiker's Guide (Walking the West Series)
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (June, 1996)
Author: John McKinney
Average review score:

Exactly What it Reports to be
McKinney's book is exactly what it says. A very good guide to day hiking in the Desert Parks of California. Some are easy hikes, some very difficult, most somewhere between. Mckinney does a very good job of describing the highlights, terrain, difficulty, and warnings, as necessary. He points out that if you are not familiar with the desert there is much more to it than you might expect. The maps in the book are adequate. There are some pictures. There is an instructive introduction to hiking in the desert. The book is easy to read, well researched, and covers some very interesting areas; geologically and historically interesting. A good resource for anyone interested in the California Desert. A must for any hiker interested in the California Desert.

Walking Down the Wild : A Journey Through the Yellowstone Rockies
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (August, 1999)
Author: Gary Ferguson
Average review score:

Ferguson achieves mastery in nature writing.
This book belongs on the shelf next to Silent Spring and The Sand County Almanac. Ferguson writes with elegance and ease of his experiences in wild country in the Yellowstone area. It is a perfect companion for anyone planning a trip to that marvelous part of the nation. His vivid descriptions of his 500-mile trek through the area are always fascinating. He artfully weaves personal observations into the human history of the area and then into natural history as he argues eleoquently against the commercial interests intent on squeezing the last buck out of our country's vanishing wilderness.
